Germany witnessed the installation of new solar systems with a combined capacity of approximately 1.04 GW in April, contributing to a total solar capacity of 87.58 GW across the country.
Data from the Federal Network Agency reveals that in the first four months of 2024, new solar installations amounted to 4,988 MW. Bavaria led the way with nearly a quarter of the new capacity, totaling 1,097 MW, followed by Baden-Wuerttemberg (684.9 MW), Saxony (651.6 MW), North Rhine-Westphalia (645 MW), and Lower Saxony (512.2 MW).
Of the solar systems commissioned in April, only 99.1 MW were subsidy-free, with 83.1 MW being ground-mounted. Subsidised facilities accounted for the majority, with 596 MW in rooftop installations and 346.9 MW in ground-mounted solar plants.
However, new wind installations experienced a decline in April, reaching only 138.3 MW compared to 216.8 MW in March. Authorization activities also slowed, with authorities approving projects with a combined capacity of 473.6 MW in April, significantly lower than the 1,562 MW authorized in March.
Despite the slowdown, development permissions were issued for wind power facilities totaling 3,311 MW in the first four months of the year.
As of the end of April, Germany's gross onshore wind capacity in operation reached 61.72 GW, with a total of 29,673 wind turbines deployed.
