Amazon Web Services (AWS) has finalized a substantial 105-megawatt (MW) wind power agreement in Ireland. This development marks a pivotal step in Amazon's broader commitment to invest in up to 800 MW of new renewable energy projects within the country.
The e-commerce behemoth's arm, AWS, has inked a pivotal power purchase agreement (PPA) with Bord na Mona, an Irish semi-state company. The unveiled contract pertains to Bord na Mona's expansive 21-turbine Derrinlough wind farm, strategically located in County Offaly within the Irish Midlands.
Commenting on the collaboration, a representative from Bord na Mona stated, “This partnership underscores our dedication to fostering sustainable energy solutions and signifies a substantial leap towards a greener future.”
Moreover, AWS has opted to participate in Bord na Mona's groundbreaking Eco Energy Park initiative situated in the Midlands. This innovative project aims to accommodate facilities for large corporations while furnishing them with access to low-carbon electricity for their operations. The Eco Energy Park is slated to accommodate over 200 MW of low to zero-carbon power generation, encompassing wind, solar, gas, and potentially cutting-edge technologies like battery storage and hydrogen.
In a statement, an AWS spokesperson highlighted the significance of the collaboration, stating, “We are proud to be the inaugural participant in the Eco Energy Park, aligning with our steadfast commitment to sustainable practices and renewable energy integration.”
This collaboration not only solidifies AWS's dedication to sustainability but also propels its ambitious target to power its operations entirely with renewable energy by the year 2025. With the establishment of data centers powered by wind and solar electricity in the Midlands, Amazon is poised to make substantial strides towards realizing its green energy objectives while fortifying its position as a leader in corporate sustainability initiatives.
