Renewable energy accounted for 64.6% of 's total power production in April, slightly down from the 65.2% recorded in March, according to preliminary data presented on Friday by Spanish grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE).

In April, renewables generated an estimated 13,515 GWh of electricity, marking a 21% increase compared to April 2023. Notably, it was the first month in history where wind, hydro, and technologies collectively topped Spain's power mix, REE announced.

maintained its position as the leading energy source for the seventh consecutive month, generating 4,643 GWh, followed by hydro with 4,112 GWh, nearly tripling its production compared to the same month last year. Solar photovoltaic farms also saw a 4.4% increase in production, generating 3,940 GWh.

April witnessed record-breaking achievements in solar photovoltaic technology. On April 24, these plants set a new daily production record with 178 GWh, while on April 28, they reached their highest share in the national power mix at 24%, according to REE.

Coupled with contributions from nuclear power plants, the share of emissions-free electricity reached 83.1% in April, marking the highest-ever monthly proportion.

Spain's gross national electricity demand increased by 4.2% year-on-year to an estimated 18,938 GWh. Adjusting for temperature and working hours, national electricity demand rose by 0.9% compared to the same month last year.
