Renewable Energy Systems () has submitted revised plans for its proposed 30MW Magheralin farm in County Down, . The project, subject to determination by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, has undergone significant alterations following public consultation and detailed technical assessments.

Initial plans were showcased at a public exhibition in March 2023, allowing community members to voice their opinions and concerns. Feedback from this consultation, combined with extensive technical and environmental surveys, guided RES in refining the project design to harmonize with the existing landscape while maximizing renewable energy generation.

Rachel Buchanan, RES development project manager, emphasized the importance of solar energy in the transition to a sustainable energy future, stating, “Solar is a free and inexhaustible resource which has an important role to play as part of a balanced energy mix.”

Notable changes to the project include the removal of two land parcels and the relocation of the substation to minimize visibility, resulting in a reduction of the project's footprint by over 45 acres. These adjustments aim to integrate the solar farm seamlessly into its surroundings while optimizing electricity generation efficiency.

Buchanan further expressed hope that the council would recognize the significance of the Magheralin Solar Farm in addressing climate change and contributing to Northern Ireland's renewable energy targets. The site was selected based on favorable solar irradiation levels, absence of statutory environmental designations, and proximity to a viable grid connection.

In addition to mitigating visual impact, RES has proposed a Landscape Planting Plan to enhance existing vegetation and introduce new tree and hedgerow plantings. These measures not only minimize visibility but also promote by creating wildlife corridors and habitats for various species.

The submission of revised plans marks a crucial step forward in RES's endeavor to advance renewable energy in Northern Ireland, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and foster sustainable development.
