Romania's Competition Council has approved Engie SA's proposed acquisition of an 80-megawatt wind project in southern Romania's Dobrogea region, signaling a green light for the French energy major's expansion plans in the country.
Announced on Wednesday, the watchdog's decision gives Engie Romania the green signal to purchase EP Wind Project (Rom) Six SA, the owner of the wind project. The council stated that the transaction does not raise any concerns regarding competition in the market.
The target entity, EP Wind Project (Rom) Six SA, currently operates a wind power plant in the commune of Chirnogeni, Constanta County. The facility, equipped with 32 Nordex turbines, has been generating electricity since late 2013. Its combined annual output of approximately 180 gigawatt hours is sufficient to meet the electricity demand of around 90,000 homes.
Engie Romania revealed its intentions for the acquisition in January, though it did not disclose the purchase price. This move underscores the company's strategic aims to bolster its presence in the Romanian market and increase its installed renewable energy capacity in the Balkan country to 1 gigawatt by the end of the decade.
