Spanish Ministry Launches Grid Tender to Boost Renewable Energy in Transition Areas

The Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition unveiled a significant initiative on Thursday, announcing the launch of a grid aimed at allocating up to 1,259 MW of synchronous power generating modules and storage capacity in areas undergoing just transition across . These areas, characterized by the closure of nuclear and coal-fired power plants, are deemed at risk of economic downturn and are targeted for revitalization through projects.

The tender aims to deploy synchronous power generating technology powered by renewable sources like -fired plants or pumped-storage hydro facilities. These installations will enhance grid flexibility and security while facilitating the integration of renewables. The solicitation specifically targets five designated just transition grid nodes, namely Garona 220 kV, Guardo 220 kV, Lada 400 kV, Mudejar 400 kV, and Robla 400 kV.

The available grid capacity at these nodes has been made possible by the closure of nuclear and coal-fired power plants. For instance, the closure of the Santa Maria de Garona nuclear power plant has freed up 151 MW at the Garona 220 kV node, while the other nodes were formerly served by coal-fired power plants.

According to the ministry, the tender complements previous initiatives for just transition nodes and represents only a portion of the available capacity. The ministry emphasized that interested bidders must present projects contributing to the socio-economic development of their chosen area, including initiatives such as job creation, training, and the installation of self-consumption energy systems.

Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis, underscoring the urgency and importance of swiftly advancing renewable energy projects in these transition areas to foster economic growth and sustainability.
