New York state's power grid operator, the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), announced on Monday that the state recently reached new milestones in wind and solar power generation.
According to NYISO, wind power facilities generated 2,176 megawatts during the 1 p.m. hour on March 9, serving 12% of the system load. Additionally, behind-the-meter and front-of-the-meter solar resources generated 3,832 megawatts at 12 p.m. on March 12, contributing 21% of the system load.
These achievements come as New York aims to triple its clean energy supply to achieve an emission-free electric system by 2040. Rich Dewey, president and CEO of NYISO, emphasized the need for further expansion, stating, “As load continues to rise across the system, additional generation and transmission will be essential to serve demand and maintain grid reliability.”
The records set in wind and solar generation highlight New York's progress towards its clean energy goals and underscore the importance of continued investment in renewable energy infrastructure to meet future energy demands while reducing emissions.
