Gravitricity and ABB Explore Gravity Energy Storage in Decommissioned Mines

Gravity firm and electrification and automation company have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to investigate the application of hoist technologies for the advancement of gravity energy storage systems in former mine shafts.

Gravitricity's GraviStore system, which involves raising and lowering heavy weights in underground shafts, is being considered for deployment in decommissioned mines globally. The collaboration with ABB aims to expedite the commercialization of Gravitricity's technology.

Charles Bennett of ABB Process Industries highlighted the company's 130-year history with mine hoists, emphasizing the potential to diversify and adapt technologies through the partnership with Gravitricity.

ABB, a supplier of mine hoist systems, sees the collaboration as an opportunity to offer adjacent and value-adding technologies to its mine customers. Repurposing disused mine shafts for energy storage not only helps offset decommissioning costs but also contributes to the broader transition to green energy.

The joint effort between Gravitricity and ABB will involve a comprehensive study of the feasibility of integrating existing hoisting technology into gravity energy storage systems. This exploration reflects a concerted effort to leverage innovative solutions for sustainable energy storage while repurposing existing .
