Avangrid Achieves Progress as First Turbines Installed in Vineyard Wind 1 Offshore Project

Avangrid has achieved a significant milestone in advancing the 1 offshore wind project located off the coast of Martha's Vineyard in . The installation of the initial five out of a total of 62 turbines has been completed, marking a crucial step towards powering the 806-MW venture.

In the upcoming weeks, these turbines are anticipated to be activated, generating 65 MW of clean energy. This output is substantial, capable of providing to approximately 30,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts, as per a statement released on Wednesday.

The Vineyard Wind 1 project, distinguished as the first commercial-scale offshore wind initiative in the , is utilizing GE Haliade-X turbines. It is currently on schedule to commence operations before the close of the year, with plans for interconnection to the grid in Barnstable. The power will be transmitted via underground cables, linking to a substation situated further inland on Cape Cod.

Prior to the initiation of power generation, Avangrid is tasked with completing essential tests and technical milestones. These include the final testing of both the array and export cables, along with activating the offshore substation, touted as one of the largest globally.

Upon full commissioning, Vineyard Wind 1 is poised to contribute significantly to the region's energy landscape, producing ample electricity to meet the demands of 400,000 homes and businesses. The project's progress aligns with the broader push towards sustainable energy sources in the United States.
