Estonian renewable energy and heat producer, Utilitas, announced on Tuesday the commencement of construction for a significant 9.3-MW solar farm in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. This development aligns with Tallinn's designation as the European Green Capital for 2023, an accolade bestowed by the European Commission in recognition of cities' environmental accomplishments and commitment to sustainability.
In a symbolic nod to its commitment, Utilitas has named the initiative the “European Green Capital Solar Park,” emphasizing its contribution to the city's sustainability goals. The company, having reached the investment decision in 2023, aims for the solar park to become Tallinn's largest of its kind.
With a substantial investment of EUR 8 million (USD 8.8m), the solar farm will encompass 15,600 bifacial modules mounted on single-axis trackers, covering an expansive 11-hectare (27.2 acres) area at the former Vao limestone quarry site. Commencing preparatory construction at the location, Utilitas anticipates project completion by April 2024.
The European Green Capital Solar Park represents a significant addition to Utilitas' existing Vao energy complex, consisting of two combined heat and power plants and a smaller solar farm. Further expansion plans for the complex next year include the incorporation of green hydrogen production, a refuelling station, and heat storage facilities. Utilitas aims to enhance its contribution to sustainable energy solutions, aligning with the broader global shift towards renewable practices.
