Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited, commonly known as Egenco, has initiated the construction of a 10-MW solar power plant in Nanjoka, Salima district, central Malawi. The groundbreaking ceremony, attended by the country's Energy Minister Ibrahim Matola, included the symbolic ribbon-cutting and a call for further energy diversification.
This project represents the inaugural phase of a larger 20-MW solar plant development, incorporating an advanced battery storage system with a capacity of 2.5 MWh.
Egenco's Acting CEO, Maxon Chitawo, noted that the company has secured adequate land for potential expansion up to 50 MW.
With an estimated investment of USD 14 million (EUR 12.8m), the 10-MW facility is slated for completion within 18 months. Chint Electrical Co is contracted as the project's contractor, overseeing the construction of this significant renewable energy initiative in Malawi.
