Metsahallitus, the manager of state-owned land and water areas in Finland, announced on Wednesday an agreement with Vattenfall to expand the Korsnas offshore wind farm project. Originally planned for a capacity of 1,300 MW, the project will now be expanded towards 2,000 MW.
Following Vattenfall's successful tender win at the end of 2022, the partners have decided to utilize an additional area that was available as an option to enhance the Korsnas wind farm.
Both Metsahallitus and Vattenfall will collaboratively develop the original and additional areas, with an updated planning initiative set to be filed with the municipality of Korsnas at the earliest opportunity. Simultaneously, progress is being made on the environmental impact assessment and land use planning for the expanded project.
Metsahallitus also disclosed plans to initiate the tendering process for two new areas before the conclusion of 2023. The state enterprise had previously outlined ambitions to tender over 6 GW of offshore wind projects in Finnish waters, with the launch of two tenders expected in the autumn.
