The State of Bavaria in Germany continues its foray into geothermal energy with the recent approval from the local council of the municipality of Emmering to initiate a quest for geothermal resources aimed at heating applications. Joining Emmering in this endeavor are three key partners – the municipalities of Maisach and Fürstenfeldbruck, as well as the local utility, Stadtwerke Fürstenfeldbruck.
While the specifics of the drilling locations are yet to be determined, seismic studies are in the planning stages. Christian Wiegner from Stadtwerke has indicated that geothermal resources in the region are anticipated at a depth of approximately 1800 meters, with a temperature of 75°C. This heat source is expected to be sufficient for heating older buildings, although potential rehabilitation of insulation and heating infrastructure may be necessary.
The initial cost for the exploratory work is estimated at EUR 500,000. After discussions, the four participating parties have agreed to equally share this cost at EUR 125,000 each, irrespective of the population size of their respective municipalities.
Notably, geothermal studies are already in progress in the municipalities neighboring Emmering, including Olching, Puchheim, and Germering, underscoring the growing interest in harnessing geothermal resources for sustainable heating solutions in the Bavarian region.
