Belgian specialty materials group Umicore SA has entered into a significant long-term agreement for power procurement from a 137-MW onshore wind farm in Poland, developed by Ignitis Renewables, a subsidiary of Lithuanian utility Ignitis Group.
The ten-year power purchase agreement (PPA), which spans from the beginning of 2025 until the end of 2034, is set to provide renewable electricity to Umicore's electric vehicle (EV) battery materials facility located in Nysa, southwestern Poland. This partnership was jointly announced by the involved parties on Tuesday.
Under the agreement, the electricity supply will be sourced from Ignitis' Silesia II Wind Farm, situated in southwestern Poland, with plans for commissioning by the second half of 2024.
This collaboration with Ignitis represents the second PPA arrangement for Umicore's Nysa plant. Approximately two years ago, the Belgian company inked a similar agreement with France's Engie SA. The new agreement underlines Umicore's commitment to sourcing sustainable power for its operations, supporting its endeavors in the electric vehicle and clean energy sectors.
