Spanish renewables developer Ecoener SA has secured €6.9 million (USD 7.3m) in Next GenerationEU funds for the implementation of energy storage systems at its existing wind farms situated in the Canary Islands.

This EU subsidy was granted following a competitive tender organized by the Institute for Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE), a Spanish government agency. The tender’s primary objective was to support renewable power generation projects within the Canary Islands, the sole region of Spain not connected to the mainland.

Ecoener achieved success in securing subsidies for all five applications it submitted in this competitive round. The company has committed to investing a total of €11.8 million in these projects, resulting in the hybridization of five energy storage systems with five operational wind farms located on the island of Gran Canaria. These wind farms include Arcos del Coronadero, El Rodeo, La Caleta, Las Casillas 1, and Lomo del Moral.

Ecoener has taken significant steps in the Canary Islands archipelago, installing 112 MW of capacity and making investments totaling €150 million since 2016.
