Bacardi, the largest privately held international spirits company, unveiled its state-of-the-art Combined Heat & Power (CHP) system in Puerto Rico. This milestone initiative is expected to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the renowned BACARDÍ rum brand by an impressive half.
The inauguration of the new CHP system was commemorated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the world's largest premium rum distillery, nestled in Cataño, Puerto Rico. The innovative CHP system represents a pivotal shift from heavy fuel oil to propane gas, signifying a substantial transition towards cleaner energy sources.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this endeavor is that the CHP system will generate 100% of the energy required to power the entire campus, including the distillery, offices, and the Casa BACARDÍ visitor center.
Edwin Zayas, Vice President of Operations for Bacardi Corporation in Puerto Rico, expressed the company's commitment to reducing GHG emissions through energy-efficient measures. He remarked, “At Bacardi, we are committed to cutting our GHG emissions by reducing our energy consumption and switching to the most sustainable form of energy where we make our beloved brands. We are proud of the work we are doing in Puerto Rico, and across the globe, to be greener and cleaner with our energy.”
Furthermore, in a dual effort towards sustainability, the BACARDÍ rum distillery has introduced an innovative wastewater treatment system that contributes to 60% of the distillery's energy needs. Magaly Feliciano, Global Sustainability Director, highlighted the company's sense of responsibility, stating, “As a family-owned company, we take great responsibility in protecting the legacy of generations to come. The work we are doing today will help build a more sustainable future for our people and the planet.”
