Enel Green Power, a geothermal developer and operator, has obtained a license to conduct geological and geophysical investigations for the Monte Termine geothermal project in the Lazio Region of Italy.
The Lazio Region granted this permit to Enel following a proposal submitted in June 2023. Enel's plan entails a two-phase study:
Phase 1 – Updating of the conceptual geological geothermal model by integrating acquired data and collecting additional geological and geophysical information to enhance subsurface knowledge. Phase 2 – Identification of optimal sites for exploratory drilling, with any proposed drilling subject to separate evaluation by competent authorities. The Monte Termine area piqued interest due to its proximity to regions previously studied for geothermal exploration, suggesting shared geological and geothermal characteristics that warrant further investigation.
Covering an area of approximately 94.32 square kilometers, the Monte Termine permit spans several municipalities in the provinces of Viterbo and the Metropolitan City of Rome. A portion of the study area falls within the Bracciano Martignano Regional Natural Park.
While an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) requirement is waived for Phase 1, the Lazio Region approved Enel's request. Phase 1 primarily involves geological and geophysical surveys conducted by small teams using existing roads and light vehicles, minimizing interference with local species, habitats, and ecosystems.
Enel Green Power recently made headlines with its commitment to invest EUR 3 billion in geothermal development in Italy. However, this investment hinges on the extension of the company's existing geothermal concessions in Tuscany, extending beyond the initially granted one-year period.
