In a significant stride toward advancing sustainable hydropower initiatives on a global scale, the International Hydropower Association (IHA) and the China Institute of Water Resources (IWHR) have forged a collaborative agreement this month. This partnership underscores China's pivotal role in the hydropower sector, characterized by its substantial capacity expansion over the past two decades, responsible for more than two-thirds of the world's newly installed hydropower capacity.
China's impressive achievements have solidified its status as a hydropower frontrunner, boasting a capacity nearly two and a half times that of any other nation. As the world grapples with the imperative of expanding hydropower capacity to meet escalating energy demands, many countries are turning to China for guidance, technological expertise, and investment.
The IHA, known for its role in fostering global collaboration in the hydropower sphere, has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable hydropower development through this partnership with IWHR.
As part of this strategic agreement, IWHR will continue to serve as the host for the IHA China National Office. This move seeks to fortify the connection between the two organizations, enhancing the representation of China's experience and priorities within the global hydropower community.
The collaboration will span various areas of cooperation, encompassing membership, advocacy, communications, data collection, sustainability initiatives, and support for the upcoming 2023 World Hydropower Congress. Importantly, this memorandum opens doors to expand the application of the Hydropower Sustainability Standard within China and in Chinese overseas investments. It also underscores the significance of adhering to commitments aimed at safeguarding World Heritage Sites, as articulated in the San José Declaration on Sustainable Hydropower.
Eddie Rich, CEO of IHA, recognized China's pivotal role in advancing the hydropower sector, stating, “China is the pre-eminent hydropower country and has done more to advance its role in meeting its net-zero targets than any other country. Chinese companies are helping other countries deliver on their necessary capacity increases to global net-zero goals and clean energy and water needs. This partnership with IHWR showcases IHA's dedication to sustainable hydropower in China and beyond.”
IWHR expressed its unwavering commitment to collaborating with the IHA in engaging Chinese stakeholders in global advocacy efforts. This collaborative endeavor underscores the shared objective of propelling clean energy initiatives on a worldwide scale, leveraging China's expertise and experience in the hydropower sector to contribute to global sustainability goals.
