Southern Power, a subsidiary of the utility giant the Southern Company, has made a strategic move by acquiring a 150MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Wyoming from PV manufacturer Qcells USA.
The South Cheyenne Solar Facility, currently under construction, is poised to commence commercial operations in the first quarter of 2024. Once operational, the electricity generated by this project will be supplied through a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA). However, Southern Power has opted to keep the details of the PPA recipients undisclosed.
It's worth noting that Qcells USA, the plant's developer, will also play a crucial role in this venture by providing engineering, procurement, and construction services. Additionally, Qcells USA will supply the modules required for the project.
This acquisition marks a significant milestone for Southern Power, representing its 30th solar project investment. Importantly, it also signifies the company's debut in Wyoming's renewable energy landscape. This expansion follows closely on the heels of the company's recent acquisition of a 200MW solar PV project in Texas, a project with the potential to scale up to an impressive 500MW of capacity.
Southern Power President Robin Boren underscored the company's dedication to advancing renewable energy, stating, “This project enhances our solar portfolio and exemplifies our commitment to the continued growth of Southern Power as we build the future of energy.”
With the addition of this project, Southern Power has significantly bolstered its solar portfolio, now boasting a total capacity of over 2.7GW. This move not only aligns with the company's sustainable energy goals but also reinforces its position as a key player in the renewable energy sector in the United States.
