RWE Approves Investment for 35MW Battery Storage Project in the Netherlands

RWE, a player in the energy sector, has greenlit its final investment decision for a battery storage project located in Eemshaven, the Netherlands. The project, set to significantly bolster the region's energy infrastructure, boasts an impressive power capacity of 35 megawatts (MW) and a substantial storage capacity of 41 megawatt-hours (MWh).

Construction of this cutting-edge facility is scheduled to commence by the close of 2023, with commissioning anticipated in 2025. The project entails the installation of a total of 110 -ion battery racks, strategically positioned at RWE's plant in Eemshaven, encompassing an area of approximately 3,000 square metres.

RWE is poised to invest €24 million in this forward-looking initiative, which is meticulously designed to seamlessly integrate the variable power generation profile of the OranjeWind offshore wind farm into the Dutch energy landscape.

In a pivotal move last year, RWE secured the implementation of the offshore OranjeWind project off the Dutch coast. This visionary venture encompasses a comprehensive system integration concept that harmoniously combines the wind farm's operations with the production of and other innovative solutions, including battery storage.

Roger Miesen, CEO of RWE Generation and Country Chair for the Netherlands, underscored the importance of flexible battery storage in an evolving energy landscape. He stated, “With the increasing share of renewable energies in the electricity mix, the demand for flexible battery storage is also rising. With this large-scale project, RWE is gaining experience in the marketing of systems on the Dutch energy markets and is actively contributing towards stabilising the Dutch electricity grid.” RWE's commitment to enhancing energy stability and sustainability in the Netherlands marks a significant step forward in the nation's journey.
