Biokraft’s Inaugural Bio-LNG Shipment Signals Major Progress in Fossil-Free Transport

The inaugural shipment, totaling 34 tonnes of bio-LNG, is poised to revolutionize the way long-haul trucks operate in the region. Each container, when filled, holds 17 tonnes of this environmentally friendly fuel, which Biokraft proudly claims can power a fully loaded long-haul truck for approximately 50,000 kilometers, effectively eliminating fossil fuel consumption for these journeys.

Central to this breakthrough is Biokraft's commitment to complete fossil fuel independence. The company's biogas, generated through the digestion of food waste and slaughterhouse byproducts from Greater Stockholm's municipalities, represents a truly renewable energy source. Strategically located adjacent to the digesters in Södertörn, the newly constructed liquefaction plant employs cooling processes to transform biomethane into liquid bio-LNG.

Boasting a remarkable production capacity of 220 GWh annually, this newly operational unit stands as the world's largest of its kind. Capable of producing 50 tonnes of bio-LNG each day, this facility extends Biokraft's market potential significantly. Heavy road transport, maritime shipping, and various industrial sectors can now embrace cleaner energy options, thanks to this innovative liquefaction plant.

Bio-LNG's impressive energy density and its cost-effective long-distance transport viability make it an ideal choice to fulfill the escalating demand for sustainable fuels in Northern Europe. The fruition of the Stockholm bio-LNG project, which commenced its journey two years ago, comes at an approximate investment of SEK 330 million (€27.7 million). The sources comprise equity, bond loans, and crucial government investment support from Klimatklivet.

Matti Vikkula, the CEO of Biokraft, expressed his satisfaction at the project's progress, stating that the launch of Stockholm bio-LNG cements the company's standing as a premier bio-LNG producer in the Northern European market. Vikkula emphasized that this endeavor attests to Biokraft's capacity to construct and operate expansive biogas facilities in alignment with its strategic growth plan.

Leading the project with unwavering determination, Jean Collin, Senior Project Director at Biokraft, shared his pride in the collaborative engineering effort that overcame challenges to deliver on the project's goals. He commended the teamwork with suppliers and partners, underscoring the synergy that drove the project's success.

While the Stockholm bio-LNG project is currently entering its commissioning phase, with production scaling up and testing of functions and delivery parameters, Biokraft envisions the facility seamlessly transitioning into regular production by year-end.
