In a significant stride towards sustainable energy development, has initiated the construction of a pioneering solar and storage venture within the Hambach opencast lignite mine site in Germany. The project is a collaborative effort between RWE and Neuland Hambach, with an aim to enhance utilization.

Scheduled for completion by the close of 2023, the RWE Neuland Solar Park is set to boast a commendable capacity of 8.4MW. Complementing this, an system designed to facilitate a two-hour power consumption and produce over 8 megawatt hours of output will serve as a buffer between power generation and the grid. The location of the new facility, situated in close proximity to the RWE Neuland 1 Solar Park, is strategically aligned with its intended purpose and reinforces the efficiency of the overall energy infrastructure.

The timely commencement of construction hinges on the swift approval of the building permit, which, if granted, could pave the way for construction to commence within the current year. Katja Wünschel, the CEO of Europe & , expressed the company's commitment to this endeavor and emphasized the broader scope of their renewable energy pursuits. She affirmed, “This marks our fourth major solar initiative in the Rhenish mining region in a short span, once again combined with an innovative storage solution. Particularly in our native North Rhine-Westphalia, we are accelerating our efforts, actualizing a spectrum of wind and solar projects.”

Wünschel's vision extends to the future trajectory of renewable energy expansion, highlighting the ambitious goal of 1000MW across Germany by 2030. Of this substantial capacity, a minimum of 500MW is earmarked for deployment in the Rhenish mining area. The convergence of RWE's technical prowess and sustainable aspirations underscores the transformation of industrial sites into hubs of green energy, fostering a paradigm shift in energy production and consumption.
