RES, a renewable energy company, has been granted planning consent for the development of a new energy storage project in south west Scotland. The decision by South Ayrshire Council, following the recommendation of the case officer, paves the way for the construction of the Holmston Farm Energy Storage System.
Located on land currently utilized as a commercial Christmas tree farm, the Holmston Farm Energy Storage System will have a capacity of 49.9MW. Its primary function will be to store excess electricity generated during times of low demand and release it back to the grid when demand exceeds generation. This innovative facility will facilitate the integration of additional wind, solar, and other renewable energy sources, ultimately enhancing the security of energy supply in the region.
Rebecca Meek, RES' head of energy storage in the UK&I, expressed her satisfaction with the unanimous approval from South Ayrshire Council. She highlighted the project's strategic placement, situated adjacent to the existing infrastructure of the Ayr substation, where it will connect. Meek emphasized the significance of this decision in supporting job creation, economic growth, and the seamless operation of the grid network during the energy transition.
As part of the project, a comprehensive landscaping plan has been devised to provide a diverse habitat for wildlife. The inclusion of new native woodland, species-rich grassland, and the creation of a pond will contribute to a remarkable 15% increase in biodiversity. Furthermore, additional measures such as bat and bird boxes, insect “hotels,” and other enhancements are proposed to further support local wildlife populations.
RES, which currently employs over 150 people in Scotland, has an impressive track record in the renewable energy sector. With the development and construction of 21 wind farms, totaling a generation capacity of 597MW, the company has been a key contributor to Scotland's renewable energy landscape. Additionally, RES operates its Global Control Centre, based in Glasgow, providing round-the-clock monitoring for energy assets worldwide.
The approval of the Holmston Farm Energy Storage System demonstrates RES' commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions and fostering environmental stewardship.
