Leeward Renewable Energy and Southern California Edison Sign 15-Year Power Purchase Agreement for Antelope Valley Battery

Leeward and Southern Edison (SCE) have recently announced a significant milestone in the renewable energy sector with the signing of a 15-year (PPA) for Leeward's pioneering Antelope Valley battery project in California.

The forthcoming construction of this state-of-the-art facility is scheduled to commence in the middle of 2023, with the project expected to become fully operational in early 2024. Upon completion, the Antelope Valley battery will represent Leeward's inaugural standalone battery system (BESS), poised to revolutionize the region's clean power capabilities.

The Antelope Valley site, strategically located adjacent to Leeward's 100MW solar and storage Rabbitbrush project and 174MW solar and storage Chapparal Springs development, will be equipped to store an impressive capacity of over 500MWh of clean power. This stored energy can be dispatched during peak load times, effectively meeting the surging demand for electricity.

In reference to this landmark collaboration, a Leeward representative expressed their enthusiasm, stating, “We are delighted to partner with Southern California Edison to bring this cutting-edge battery energy storage system to fruition. This project signifies a significant step forward in our commitment to delivering sustainable energy solutions while enhancing grid reliability.”

During the peak construction phase, it is estimated that the Antelope Valley battery project will generate approximately 70 union jobs, contributing to the local economy and fostering employment opportunities within the region. Additionally, the project is expected to generate substantial property tax revenue and deliver significant economic benefits for Kern County, underscoring the positive impact of renewable energy initiatives on local communities.
