Finnish agency has announced that it has chosen state-owned operator to carry out seabed surveys in preparation for upcoming offshore wind tenders scheduled for 2024.

Following a competitive tender process, GTK was selected to conduct the necessary sonar-based surveys. The surveys will commence in Närpes and subsequently cover Pyhäjoki, Raahe, and Siikajoki, starting around mid-July.

The designated area for a single offshore wind power zone is estimated to be between 120 square kilometres and 230 square kilometres, with water depths ranging from 10 to 45 metres. These offshore wind power areas will be situated in public water regions within the Gulf of Bothnia.

Ville Koskimäki, the project development manager for wind power at Metsähallitus, highlighted the significance of seabed sounding in facilitating the construction of offshore wind turbines, determining the placement of submarine cables, and conducting nature surveys. Koskimäki stated, “The sounding data helps, for example, to find out where wind turbines or other offshore wind farm structures can be located and what kind of foundations are needed for wind turbines.”

GTK brings to the table decades of expertise in studying sediments in 's coastal areas. The organization has accumulated a unique seabed geodatabase over the years, comparing the data obtained from acoustic-seismic soundings with extensive sample series drilled from the seabed.

In addition to the shape of the seabed, GTK's focus lies on defining crucial geological characteristics, such as depths and soil thicknesses. This valuable information aids in determining suitable locations for wind turbines and other offshore wind farm , as well as identifying the necessary foundation requirements.

GTK's responsibilities also include processing the sonar-generated data for permit applications, planning, assessing seabed risks, and providing relevant information to the authorities regarding offshore wind power areas.

The selection of GTK by Metsähallitus reflects the collaborative efforts being undertaken to facilitate the development of offshore wind energy in Finland. Through thorough seabed surveys and data analysis, these initiatives aim to support the sustainable expansion of sources and contribute to Finland's transition towards a greener future.
