Hellenic Cables, a provider of submarine cable solutions, announced today the signing of a significant contract with Orsted, a global leader in offshore wind energy. The agreement entails the supply of inter-array cables for the highly anticipated Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm, situated off the coast of the United Kingdom.
As part of this agreement, Hellenic Cables will take charge of the entire process, including design, manufacturing, supply, termination, and testing of the inter-array cables. These cables will serve as the crucial link connecting the wind turbines to the offshore converter station in the North Sea.
The scope of the supply will encompass an impressive 262 kilometers of 66kV inter-array cables featuring XLPE insulation. This accounts for approximately 50% of the total requirements for the wind farm. The manufacturing process is scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of 2025 at Hellenic Cables' specialized submarine cable factory in Corinth, Greece.
With an impressive capacity of around 2.85GW, Hornsea 3 will make a substantial contribution to the UK government's ambitious target of operating 50GW of offshore wind energy by 2030. Orsted has recently expressed growing confidence in taking a Final Investment Decision on the project during the course of this year, as highlighted during their Capital Markets Day.
Hornsea 3 will be strategically positioned 160 kilometers off the Yorkshire coast, utilizing the favorable wind conditions in the region. This location has been carefully chosen to maximize the wind farm's efficiency and optimize clean energy generation.
Upon completion, the combined capacity of Orsted's Hornsea zone, consisting of Hornsea 1, Hornsea 2, and Hornsea 3, will exceed an impressive 5GW. This significant milestone underscores Orsted's commitment to leading the global transition towards renewable energy.
Luke Bridgman, the senior project director for Hornsea 3, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration with Hellenic Cables, stating, “We are delighted to further Orsted's deepening relationship with Hellenic Cables with this important contract award for Hornsea 3. We look forward to a successful collaboration during the execution phase as part of achieving our overall Hornsea 3 goal of providing low-cost clean energy at scale.”
