Northern Ireland-based company, Ionic Technologies, has achieved a significant production milestone at its demonstration plant in Belfast. The company has developed an innovative process to produce high purity rare earth materials, specifically for use in high-performance permanent magnets. This achievement positions Ionic Technologies as a major UK producer of 100% recycled rare earth oxides, contributing to the region's security of supply for a vital raw material needed to support the UK's net zero transition and green transport revolution.
The significance of Ionic Technologies' breakthrough lies in its potential to establish secure and independent supply chains for rare earth elements within the UK. Currently, China dominates the mining and recycling industries associated with these elements. Ionic Technologies, a spinout from Queen's University Belfast and acquired by Australian multinational Ionic Rare Earths Limited in 2022, aims to scale up production and construct a processing plant, further establishing Belfast as a burgeoning hub for clean energy in the UK.
General Manager of Ionic Technologies, Thomas Kelly, expressed pride in their accomplishments, stating, “We have produced over 5kg of rare earth oxides at specification, including neodymium oxide (Nd2O3) and dysprosium oxide (Dy2O3).” He emphasized that this significant milestone validates their position as one of the UK's leading innovators in magnet recycling and technology advancement. The company's patented process utilizes end-of-life magnets, providing a dependable source of rare earth elements within the UK and offering an opportunity to supply these strategically important materials to the global market.
Kelly further added, “Ionic Technologies is proud to be at the center of Northern Ireland's growing regional green industry, creating well-paid and sustainable employment for local talent.” With plans to expand operations, the company aims to establish a commercial-scale facility that could generate up to 100 highly skilled jobs in Belfast. This development will also contribute to securing the UK's future rare earth supply, crucial for achieving net zero ambitions.
