First Phase of Chevelon Butte Wind Farm Marks Arizona’s Largest Renewable Energy Milestone

takes a significant step towards clean and sustainable energy as , a  energy company, announces the completion of the first phase of the wind farm. Located on the historic Chevelon Butte Ranch in Coconino and Navajo counties, this ambitious project is set to become the largest wind power endeavor in the state, marking the first wind farm constructed in northern Arizona in nearly a decade.

With a projected total capacity of 454 MW, the Chevelon Butte wind farm will play a vital role in Arizona's landscape. Bernerd Da Santos, a representative from AES, highlights the project's significance, stating, “Once both phases are complete, Chevelon Butte will be the largest wind power project in Arizona and the first wind farm built in northern Arizona in nearly a decade.”

The Chevelon Butte Ranch holds a storied past as one of Arizona's oldest operating cattle ranches, and the wind farm's development ensures the preservation of this longstanding tradition. By integrating the wind farm with existing land uses, the landowning family and the Arizona State Department of Land can continue the legacy of more than a century of cattle ranching.

AES has diligently worked alongside regulatory and permitting authorities to incorporate unique design features into the wind farm's development. These measures aim to safeguard sensitive environmental resources and preserve the pristine dark skies of northern Arizona. Notably, the project includes a radar-activated lighting system that ensures the turbine lights activate only when low-flying planes are present in the vicinity, mitigating potential disruption to the region's tranquil nightscape.

Upon completion, the Chevelon Butte wind farm will boast a remarkable total of 105 wind turbines. The first phase, currently operational and generating 238 MW, paves the way for the second phase, set to contribute an additional 216 MW of renewable wind power. This second phase is expected to come online next year, solidifying the project's status as a significant milestone in Arizona's renewable energy ambitions.

The Chevelon Butte wind farm serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts of AES, the local community, and environmental stakeholders. By harnessing the power of wind, this landmark project not only delivers a substantial boost to Arizona's renewable energy capacity but also demonstrates a commitment to a sustainable future. As Arizona embraces this ambitious venture, it sets an inspiring example for other regions seeking to transition to cleaner and greener sources of electricity.
