Pennant Walters, a prominent energy company, has recently submitted a planning application for the development of the Mynydd y Glyn Wind Farm. The fate of this project, which has the potential to generate up to 30MW of electricity from seven turbines, lies in the hands of Welsh Ministers who will ultimately determine its approval.
The proposed wind farm, set to have an operational lifespan of 30 years, has undergone significant modifications based on feedback received during the statutory consultation process. In response to concerns raised, additional surveys were conducted to assess the impact on peat, water quality, and the local Golden Plover population. Consequently, appropriate mitigation measures have been implemented to address any identified issues.
Furthermore, amendments were made to the initial proposals following early engagement in the winter of 2021. These modifications encompassed reducing the size of the turbines, relocating one turbine away from a deep peat area, establishing a new access point and junction from the highway, and adjusting access tracks to minimize any adverse effects on sensitive receptors.
Expressing gratitude to the individuals who participated in the engagement and consultation events, Meryl Lewis, Director of Environment and Sustainability for Pennant Walters, emphasized the company's commitment to community engagement. Lewis stated, “Engaging with the communities we operate within is of the utmost importance to Pennant Walters, and we place great value on their feedback.”
Continuing the dialogue with the local community, Pennant Walters intends to explore the establishment of a Community Benefits Fund, aimed at supporting local projects in the region if the wind farm receives consent and becomes operational.
At present, the planning application is under the purview of Planning and Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW), where it will be thoroughly assessed by an inspector before the final decision is made by Welsh Ministers.
Interested parties and stakeholders have until the 28th of June 2023 to provide their comments on the proposal, thus contributing to the decision-making process.
