Blackfish, an offshore engineering company, has launched a Scottish division aimed at supporting the rapidly growing offshore wind sector. The company, which is based in Bristol, already has a strong presence in Scotland's marine renewables industry, working with notable firms such as Mocean Energy and Orbital, as well as several offshore wind clients.
In order to further cater to Scotland's flourishing offshore wind projects, Blackfish plans to enhance its services by establishing a dedicated team in Aberdeen and Edinburgh. This team will be led by experienced engineers Nick Del-Greco and James Hastie, along with strategic advisor Stuart Brown.
Jonathan Powell, the managing director of Blackfish, emphasized the high demand for solution-focused engineers in Scotland's offshore wind market. Powell stated that the company aims to collaborate with developers to tackle complex engineering challenges, prioritizing safety improvements, innovative advancements, and cost reduction.
Blackfish already has partnerships with two of the three largest wind turbine original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and nine of the world's largest offshore wind developers. The company is actively working on developing customized designs and technologies to enhance efficiency and decrease costs within the sector.
Additionally, Blackfish is engaged in collaborative efforts with renowned innovation bodies, including Wave Energy Scotland, the Carbon Trust, and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult. Together, they are striving to develop industry-standard products, particularly in the areas of electrical connections and moorings.
James Hastie, a senior mechanical engineer at Blackfish, expressed confidence in the company's expertise in addressing offshore challenges. He highlighted that establishing a distinct Scottish operation allows them to be closer to their customers, provide localized content, and create further opportunities for expansion within Scotland's offshore wind market.
