Origami Solar Launches Next-Generation Steel Module Frame to Leverage Inflation Reduction Act Incentives

Origami , a company based in Oregon, is introducing its second-generation steel module frame, boasting improved structural performance and a lighter design compared to its initial prototype. The company aims to disrupt the solar industry's reliance on imported aluminum by utilizing regional steel resources, thereby challenging Asian supply chains.

According to Gregg Patterson, the CEO of Origami Solar, these frames are well-suited to support the entry of large-format modules into the market. To produce the steel frames, Origami has partnered with Welser Profile, a reputable manufacturer specializing in roll-formed steel products.

In their commitment to sustainability, Origami plans to employ recycled or “green” steel, potentially resulting in a remarkable reduction of up to 93% in production-related greenhouse gas emissions. The company also invites module makers and other partners to evaluate and test their frames for compatibility and performance.

Origami Solar's pursuit of technological advancement has yielded promising results. Their product received favorable test outcomes from TECSI Solar, an esteemed testing laboratory, in various areas such as toe clamping, downforce, up force, laminate rigidity, and installation compatibility. Furthermore, the company secured financial support from the Energy Department's American-Made Solar Prize competition, receiving $500,000 in cash and an additional $75,000 in voucher support, enabling them to advance their technology towards commercialization.
