RWE has begun construction of two 7MW wind turbines between Inden and Düren-Merken in the district of Düren, western Germany, with a combined capacity of 14MW.
The company said commissioning of the Düren-Merken wind farm is scheduled for the second half of 2026. Once operational, the project is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to supply about 9,000 households annually.
RWE added that it will allocate 0.2 euro cents per kilowatt hour of electricity generated to local municipalities, providing potential additional annual income of up to €65,000.
The utility said it currently has 91MW of new wind capacity under construction in the Rhenish mining area, where it already operates wind and solar projects totalling more than 550MW.
Katja Wünschel, chief executive of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said: “Every wind turbine counts: RWE is consistently driving forward the energy transition in the Rhenish mining area and is continuing to invest in the expansion of renewable energies. Wind energy is a central pillar of electricity generation in this windy region. With these two plants in Düren-Merken alone, we will be able to supply around 9,000 households per year with green electricity after commissioning.”
