Zelestra has begun construction of the Bellomo agrivoltaic solar plant in Modica, Sicily, as the company accelerates its growth in the Italian market.
The project is supported by a 10-year power purchase agreement with BKW that also covers the 6.5MWdc Ginosa solar facility in Puglia, which is already operational.
Bellomo is expected to avoid around 5,200 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, the company said.
Zelestra noted that more than 80% of the fenced site will remain in agricultural use, combining sheep grazing, native pasture and a carob tree belt alongside tracker-mounted photovoltaic systems.
Improving System has been appointed EPC contractor, with construction forecast to support up to 80 local jobs.
Bianca Sarbu, managing director trading and origination at BKW, said the agreement provides “a strong and stable framework for delivering clean solar power to Modica,” adding the company remains committed to advancing the energy transition in Italy and beyond.
The scheme also includes installation of more than 15 solar-powered light poles at rural intersections under Zelestra’s EmPowerS initiative, delivered in partnership with the Municipality of Modica.
Mayor Maria Monisteri Caschetto said the project promotes the local territory while preserving its agricultural identity and improving road safety through new solar lighting.
Eliano Russo, CEO of Zelestra in Italy, said Bellomo’s construction follows the commissioning of Ginosa and reflects the company’s focus on delivering clean energy while supporting rural development and skilled employment.
Zelestra added that Italy is one of its fastest-growing markets, with a current pipeline of about 1.4GW of solar and battery storage projects that it aims to double this year.
