Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat has held talks with China’s Sany Group on potential cooperation to manufacture wind turbines in Egypt, as the country seeks to localise renewable energy supply chains, the ministry said.
The discussions reviewed Sany’s model for establishing a wind turbine manufacturing plant and the localisation of its advanced technology, according to a ministry statement. The meeting followed talks held last month in Beijing on the Chinese equipment maker’s plans to enter the Egyptian market and proposed partnership structures for producing equipment and components for solar and wind power.
The two sides also discussed Sany’s broader activities in manufacturing equipment for renewable power plants and the incentives available under Egypt’s industrial localisation strategy. The possibility of setting up an additional factory for solar energy equipment was considered, alongside requirements linked to upcoming renewable projects that would rely on locally manufactured components.
Esmat said Egypt’s electricity sector is continuing efforts to support technology transfer for solar and wind manufacturing and stressed the importance of building domestic industrial capacity.
“The ministry is open to all partnership models that involve using locally manufactured equipment,” Esmat said, adding that the initiative aligns with the state’s wider strategy to localise industry and adopt modern technologies.
He also highlighted ongoing work to upgrade Egypt’s unified power grid, the status of land allocated for renewable projects and progress on integrating solar and wind energy into the system.
Esmat said the sector has taken significant steps towards positioning Egypt as a regional energy hub and a centre for electrical equipment manufacturing.
