Renewable energy developer OX2 has signed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with food retailer Ahold Delhaize to support the development of two new onshore wind farms in western Finland, the companies said.
The VPPA covers the Salo-Ylikoski and Korkeamaa projects, which together will span more than 2,400 hectares and comprise 24 wind turbines. The wind farms are expected to enter operation in 2028.
Under the agreement, Ahold Delhaize will contract around 70% of the projects’ projected annual electricity output of 472 gigawatt-hours, the retailer said.
Ahold Delhaize added that the deal would increase its future renewable electricity coverage in Europe from 56% to 76%, based on projected consumption across its operations.
“This VPPA marks another important milestone in our ambition to fully match the electricity consumption in our European operations with renewable energy by 2035,” said Frank Sluis, chief financial officer of Ahold Delhaize Europe & Indonesia.
The agreement is Ahold Delhaize’s fourth power purchase agreement in Europe and forms part of the group’s broader strategy to achieve net-zero emissions from its own operations by 2040, the company said.
