European Energy said it has commenced commercial operations at the Kvosted solar and battery park in Denmark, adding a 200-megawatt-hour battery system that it described as the largest combined solar and battery facility in Northern Europe.
The park, located in Viborg Municipality, was completed and energised in December 2025, with the battery system integrated directly into the existing Kvosted solar plant, the company said.
Under a new agreement, the co-located solar and battery assets will be optimised by energy trader Danske Commodities, European Energy added.
European Energy EPC was responsible for installing the battery system, including electrical integration and supporting infrastructure, completing the work within seven months. The project has now entered a commissioning phase, during which technical systems will be prepared for full-scale operation.
“By combining solar generation and battery storage, we can improve the utilisation of renewable energy throughout the day,” said Gregor McDonald, vice president and head of energy trading and power purchase agreements at European Energy.
Danske Commodities said its optimisation role builds on its experience in managing flexible energy assets. “Utilising 20 years of power trading experience and a fully automated algorithmic setup, Danske Commodities has become a leading optimiser of renewables and flexible energy assets,” said Dirk Kaiser, head of renewables business development at the company.
European Energy said the battery system significantly enhances the site’s capacity to balance supply and demand. “With a total storage capacity of 200 MWh, the facility can store electricity equivalent to the average daily consumption of around 18,000 households,” said Mads Lykke Andersen, head of technology development at European Energy.
The company added that battery storage will play a larger role across its portfolio going forward. “In the future, we will place strong emphasis on batteries across our project portfolio,” said Thorvald Spanggaard, executive vice president and head of project development at European Energy.
The batteries will allow the solar park to supply renewable power after sunset and contribute to a more stable and flexible electricity system, the company said.
