Renewable energy developer European Energy has taken a final investment decision to begin construction of a 225-megawatt agrivoltaic solar project near Vizzini in Sicily, the company said.
European Energy said the project is expected to be operational by the end of 2027 and, once completed, would be the largest solar installation in Italy.
The development received authorisation in 2023 and secured a long-term contract under Italy’s recent FERX Contracts for Difference auction, which is designed to support renewable power generation.
“The Vizzini project illustrates European Energy’s ability to advance complex renewable energy developments in Italy’s evolving power market,” said Alessandro Migliorini, the company’s director and country manager for Italy. “Its integrated design demonstrates how agricultural use can be maintained within large-scale solar developments.”
Agrivoltaic projects combine solar power generation with continued agricultural activity, a model increasingly promoted in Italy to address land-use concerns while expanding renewable capacity.
European Energy Executive Vice President and Head of Project Development Thorvald Spanggard said the investment reflected the company’s long-term strategy in the country. He cited the 120-MW Troia solar park in the Apulia region, which was connected to the grid in 2022, as part of its existing Italian portfolio.
The company did not disclose the total investment cost of the Vizzini project.
