Ireland’s wind industry has welcomed the government’s new Accelerating Infrastructure Report and Action Plan, describing it as an important step toward improving planning processes and advancing the country’s shift to clean energy.
Wind Energy Ireland said the report includes recommendations intended to accelerate delivery of critical infrastructure, particularly upgrades to the electricity grid needed to support higher levels of renewable generation.
“Our system for delivering critical infrastructure in Ireland, including renewable energy, is not fit for purpose and this has been true for a long time,” said Noel Cunniffe, chief executive of Wind Energy Ireland.
Cunniffe said the report outlines actions that could speed up the deployment of clean electricity, reinforce the national grid and enable greater electrification across the economy. He added that the inclusion of detailed timelines and clear accountability through the Department of Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform (DPER) demonstrates strong government commitment.
According to Cunniffe, the wind industry is prepared to work with state bodies to ensure the action plan is implemented effectively, calling it a potential “landmark on Ireland’s path to energy independence.” He also noted that government departments and agencies will require adequate funding and technical expertise to meet the responsibilities set out in the report.
