Dominican Republic Vice President Raquel Peña has inaugurated the 162-megawatt-peak Cotoperi Solar complex in Guaymate, La Romana, marking the country’s latest expansion of utility-scale renewable energy.
The ceremony was attended by Energy Minister Joel Santos, Acciona president José Manuel Entrecanales, JMMB Dominican Republic executive president Juan José Melo and Grupo Pais chief executive Juan Carlos Pais.
Acciona Energía holds a 51% stake in the project, with Cotosolar Holding owning the remaining 49%. The Cotoperi complex consists of three solar plants that together will generate around 286 gigawatt-hours of electricity per year and avoid more than 210,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, the company said.
Acciona Energía said construction of the project created more than 600 direct and indirect jobs, while related social programmes have supported over 3,500 residents in surrounding communities. The company added that the project is contributing to water and sanitation improvements in Bella Vista and Villa Penca, benefitting more than 4,500 people.
Cotoperi is Acciona’s second photovoltaic project in the Dominican Republic following the Calabaza I plant. The company is also developing the 82.69 MWp Pedro Corto facility in partnership with Grupo Pais.
Grupo Pais and JMMB FES said they continue to invest in renewable initiatives totalling more than 710 MWp across the country.
