RWE said it has secured three new advanced agrivoltaic (Agri-PV) projects in Italy through the country’s latest Resilience and Recovery Plan auction, expanding its solar-agriculture portfolio in the region.
The company said the projects — Acquafredda 2 (11.7 MWac) in Campania, Enna Piscopo (9.5 MWac) in Sicily and Cave (9 MWac) in Calabria — will include about 47,000 solar modules and are scheduled to enter service in 2026. Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks.
RWE said the installations will use elevated mounting structures, comprising two high tracker systems with a movable axis and one high fixed-tilt design. The developer said the configurations will allow either sheep grazing or crop cultivation beneath the panels, forming what it described as a fully integrated agrivoltaic-pastoral system. It added that the elevated structures can help shield farmland from hail, frost, drought and heavy rainfall.
The company said it will monitor meteorological conditions, agricultural yields and system performance across all three sites.
Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said the award comes at a significant moment for the firm. “This is great timing,” she said. “Shortly before the completion of our two Agri-PV projects from last year’s auction, we now have the green light to start construction on three more projects using this innovative technology.” She added that “Italy is taking the lead in Agri-PV because land is a scarce resource that must be used responsibly and efficiently,” and said RWE looks forward to “continuing to support Italy’s energy targets.”
RWE currently operates 17 onshore wind farms in Italy with a combined 598 MW of installed capacity. The company’s first commercial-scale Agri-PV plants — Morcone (9.8 MWac) and Acquafredda (9.3 MWac) — are located in Campania. RWE is also constructing the 47 MW Serra Palino wind farm in Apulia and the 45 MW Venusia project in Basilicata.
