TechWorks Marine has started a 12-month metocean survey in Maritime Area A – Tonn Nua, off Ireland’s south coast, to support EirGrid’s Powering Up Offshore South Coast project, the company said on Tuesday.
The Dun Laoghaire-based marine data specialist was commissioned by Fugro, EirGrid’s appointed marine survey supplier, to collect baseline oceanographic and environmental data. The information will inform the design and development of offshore substations and grid connections for future wind projects.
The initiative is part of Ireland’s plan to integrate 900 megawatts of offshore wind capacity into the national power grid, contributing to government targets of sourcing 80% of electricity from renewables and achieving at least 5 gigawatts of offshore wind generation.
The Tonn Nua site, identified under the South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan (DMAP), is viewed as a key zone for advancing Ireland’s renewable energy and energy security objectives.
TechWorks Marine said it brings over two decades of experience in metocean data collection to the survey.
“We are delighted to support EirGrid and Fugro on this landmark project for Ireland’s energy transition,” said TechWorks Marine chief executive Charlotte O’Kelly. “Our team is committed to delivering world-class oceanographic data that underpins a resilient, sustainable renewable energy system on the south coast.”
EirGrid’s chief transformation, technology and offshore officer Liam Ryan said: “These surveys would not be possible without a huge amount of coordination and strategic planning of staff across EirGrid, our strategic partners, fishing communities and local landowners.”
“The data being gathered from this research is essential in shaping plans for the installation of this transmission infrastructure for offshore wind and creating a cleaner energy future for Ireland,” Ryan added.
