The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing financing to Lithuania’s Ignitis Group to support the construction of the 314-megawatt Kelmė wind farm, the largest onshore wind project in the Baltic region, the bank said on Thursday.
The facility in western Lithuania is expected to generate around 740 gigawatt-hours of zero-carbon electricity annually, sufficient to power approximately 250,000 households. The €318 million financing package also includes contributions from the European Investment Bank, Swedbank, and the Nordic Investment Bank.
“The Kelmė wind farm strengthens Lithuania’s energy security while advancing the country’s green transition,” the EBRD said in a statement, adding that the project aligns with Ignitis Group’s target of reaching 5 gigawatts of installed green generation capacity by 2030.
Ignitis, Lithuania’s largest electricity supplier, has received previous support from the EBRD for investments in electricity distribution and e-mobility infrastructure. Since beginning operations in the country, the bank has invested more than €1.8 billion in 143 projects focused on sustainable infrastructure and the green transition.
The new wind farm is expected to play a key role in meeting Lithuania’s national energy objectives as well as broader European Union climate goals, the statement said.
