RWE has started construction of two onshore wind farms in Italy with a combined capacity of 92 megawatts (MW), further expanding its renewable energy portfolio in southern Europe, the company said on Thursday.
The Serra Palino project, located in Apulia, will feature eight turbines of 5.9MW each for a total capacity of 47MW, while the Venusia project in Basilicata will comprise eight 5.6MW turbines, providing 45MW of capacity.
Both projects were awarded under Italy’s FER1 renewable energy auction scheme and are expected to be commissioned by the end of 2026. Once operational, they will generate enough electricity to power more than 83,000 Italian households, RWE said.
“Our commitment to supporting the energy transition continues unabated,” said Paolo Raia, Country Chair of RWE Renewables Italia. “After the commissioning of the Mondonuovo wind farm in July, we have started the construction of two new onshore wind farms in Italy. Once operational, these plants will provide green energy to over 83,000 Italian households. Onshore wind energy is a pillar of the country’s energy transition in its own right: it is clean, reliable and affordable.”
RWE currently operates 17 onshore wind farms in Italy with a total installed capacity of 598MW, supplying renewable electricity to more than 500,000 homes. The company is also constructing its first commercial-scale agri-photovoltaic (agri-PV) plants — Morcone (9.8MWac) and Acquafredda (9.3MWac) — both located in Campania.
The new wind developments underline RWE’s strategy to expand its renewable energy footprint in Italy, where onshore wind plays a key role in achieving the country’s national energy transition and decarbonisation goals.
