Downing Renewable Developments has received planning approval for its Fair Park solar and battery energy storage project in Cornwall, following a successful appeal. The 49.9-megawatt (MW) development will operate for 30 years and support both clean energy generation and environmental improvements.
The project, located near Carland Cross, includes plans for solar power generation alongside battery storage capacity, and will continue to allow sheep grazing on the land. Downing said the scheme will incorporate biodiversity enhancements such as wildflower meadows, new hedgerows and habitat creation that exceed statutory planning requirements.
Comprehensive environmental protections have also been outlined to safeguard local wildlife, watercourses, and the nearby Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
“We are delighted to have obtained planning consent for our Fair Park solar project, which will make a valuable contribution to helping meet both national and Cornwall Net Zero targets,” said Tony Gannon, Head of Downing Renewable Developments. “In addition, it also delivers a significant community benefit programme which provides those closest to the development with lower cost energy through our free domestic solar rooftop initiative.”
As part of this community benefit package, Downing will offer free solar panel installations to local residents to help reduce household energy costs. The company said the project will also support local employment during construction, maintain public rights of way, and provide opportunities for local businesses.
The Fair Park scheme forms part of Downing’s wider 6-gigawatt (GW) renewable energy pipeline across the UK.
