Greenvolt Power has secured a 499 megawatt-hour (MWh) contract for its 75 megawatt (MW) battery storage project in southern Italy, following the country’s first large-scale battery auction, the company said on Thursday.
The project, located in the Calabria region, will feature Greenvolt’s first 8-hour lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery system. The contract, awarded under Italy’s new MACSE (Electric Storage Procurement Mechanism) scheme, will run for 15 years.
The auction, launched by Italian grid operator TERNA, allocated 10 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of storage capacity from a total of 40GWh in submitted bids. It is the first in a series of three auctions planned through 2028, aimed at boosting system flexibility and supporting the integration of renewable energy as Italy targets 70GWh of operational storage by 2030.
“We are very pleased with the outcome of the Italian auction, achieved in a highly competitive context,” said João Manso Neto, CEO of Greenvolt Group. “Batteries, a sector in which Greenvolt is one of the leading European players, are fundamental to ensuring grid stability at a time of strong expansion of renewable energy. At the same time, this 15-year contract represents a clear reinforcement of our operations in the Italian market.”
The award marks a significant step for Greenvolt Power as it expands its presence in energy storage markets across Europe. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
