Renewable energy producer Sonnedix has expanded its footprint in Italy with the acquisition of five solar projects totaling 226 megawatts (MW) from Capital Dynamics, the company said on Monday.
The transaction increases Sonnedix’s operational capacity in Italy to over 800MW. Four of the newly acquired assets, located in the regions of Sicily and Lazio, are already in operation.
With approximately 500MW currently under construction, Sonnedix said it remains on course to reach 1 gigawatt (GW) of operating capacity in the country by the end of the year. The company’s development pipeline of 1.1GW is expected to double its Italian capacity to 2GW within the next three years.
Sonnedix also announced its entry into the Italian battery storage market. Construction has begun on its first battery storage project—an 18MW system with a four-hour duration—co-located with a 70MW solar plant under development in Sicily.
“These latest acquisitions are a testament to our long-term commitment to delivering clean, affordable, and reliable energy to customers,” Sonnedix CEO Axel Thiemann said in a statement. “Looking ahead, our focus is on continuing to convert our pipeline, particularly exploring opportunities in battery storage and hybridisation.”
Mario Volpe, head of growth for Southern Europe, said the company is advancing its 2GW operational target for 2028. “As we grow, we continue focusing on developing battery energy storage solutions and delivering a long-term, reliable, and 100% renewable supply of energy,” he said.
The move underscores growing investor interest in Italy’s solar and storage markets, as the country works to meet EU decarbonisation targets.
