Vattenfall has made a final investment decision to proceed with the 63-megawatt Clashindarroch 2 onshore wind farm in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, paving the way for construction to begin in 2026.
The new project will be located adjacent to the operational Clashindarroch wind farm near Huntly, which has been generating renewable electricity for a decade. Clashindarroch 2 will comprise 14 turbines and is expected to produce enough electricity to power more than 61,000 UK homes annually.
“This investment decision reflects our confidence in the UK’s onshore wind sector and is a clear signal of our commitment to creating local jobs and strengthening the supply chain,” said Claus Wattendrup, Vattenfall’s UK country manager.
Preparatory work at the site is scheduled to begin in autumn 2025, with full construction set to start in spring 2026. First power generation is expected by summer 2027.
The wind farm is projected to offset approximately 91,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year and includes a community benefit fund of around £315,000 annually to support local projects. The existing Clashindarroch wind farm has contributed over £2 million to community initiatives since it began operating.
“Clashindarroch 2 will bring real economic benefits to the region, while also enhancing the local landscape and supporting wildlife through our dedicated habitat management plans,” Wattendrup added. “By generating affordable, home-grown renewable energy, it will also help protect bill payers from the rollercoaster of fossil fuel prices and support the UK’s climate goals.”
