Sweden’s largest utility-scale solar farm, developed by independent power producer Alight and renewable energy company Neoen, has been commissioned and is now fully operational, the companies said on Tuesday.
Located at Hultsfred Airport in Småland, the 100 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar installation spans approximately 130 hectares and features 174,000 low-carbon photovoltaic panels. It is expected to generate around 100 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually—enough to power more than 18,000 Swedish homes.
“Bringing this solar farm into operation with our partner Neoen and PPA offtaker H&M represents a milestone for us and demonstrates that the Swedish market can deliver large-scale, unsubsidised renewable energy fast,” said Alight CEO Warren Campbell. “It’s a landmark achievement in Swedish renewable power production.”
The project is backed by a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) signed in late 2022 with H&M Group. Under the terms of the agreement, the fashion retailer will receive 95% of the solar farm’s electricity output and guarantees of origin, supporting its target to source 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
“As a global fashion player, we have both the power and the responsibility to drive the energy transition,” said Marcus Hartmann, head of sustainability for H&M Northern Europe. “Through our collaboration with Alight and Neoen, we are creating new renewable electricity capacity in Sweden.”
Neoen’s Sweden managing director Laetitia Prot noted the project adds to the company’s growing portfolio in the country, which now includes 304MW of operational assets across solar, wind, and battery storage.
“Hultsfred solar farm is our fourth asset entering into operation in Sweden,” Prot said. “With these complementary three technologies at scale, we are actively contributing to Sweden’s competitive and clean energy transition.”
The project was financed through structured debt from Danske Bank. Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) was carried out by a consortium of Equans Energy and Storage and Solkompaniet. The solar farm is connected to the local grid operated by E.ON.
