RP Global has commenced construction of a 50-megawatt (MW) solar park in Harbke, Saxony-Anhalt, located on the spoil tip of one of Germany’s oldest lignite mines, the company said on Tuesday.
This marks RP Global’s first solar project in Germany and is being developed in partnership with EPC contractor MaxSolar. Plans for future expansion of the plant are also underway.
The project site, shaped by decades of mining, benefits from two existing power lines crossing the area, allowing efficient grid connection without the need for new transmission infrastructure.
Harbke holds historical significance in Germany’s energy sector, with lignite mining occurring there on both sides of the East-West border following World War II.
Construction access to the site follows the protected “Kolonnenweg” border strip, with measures in place to preserve its historical features.
RP Global described the photovoltaic (PV) plant as one of the most significant energy projects in the Börde district, which is part of the Global Sustainable Municipality initiative.
The company added that the project aligns with Harbke’s sustainability objectives under the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 framework.
The company said in a statement: “The Harbke project supports the transition to sustainable energy in a region historically linked to fossil fuels, marking a significant step towards a greener future.”
