German energy group RWE has completed construction and begun operations at one of its largest onshore wind farms in Italy, the 53-megawatt (MW) Mondonuovo project, located in the Apulia region.
The wind farm, situated in the municipality of Mesagne in the province of Brindisi, is equipped with nine turbines, each with a capacity of 5.9MW. According to RWE, the facility is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 55,000 households.
Construction on the site began about one year ago and involved 150 professionals from RWE and various external partner companies.
“The commissioning of the Mondonuovo Wind Farm represents an important milestone in our journey to support Italy in building a sustainable, stable and cost-efficient energy system,” said Paolo Raia, country chair at RWE Renewables Italia. “Now our fleet in Italy can provide green energy to more than 500,000 households.”
RWE currently operates 17 onshore wind farms and one photovoltaic plant in Italy, bringing its total installed renewable energy capacity in the country to 589MW.
In addition to the Mondonuovo project, RWE is advancing its development of agri-photovoltaic installations, including its first commercial-scale Agri-PV plants in Morcone (9.8MWac) and Acquafredda (9.3MWac), both located in the Campania region.
In March, the company was awarded two new wind power projects under Italy’s FER1 auction scheme. The 45MW Venusia wind farm in Potenza and the 48MW Serra Palino wind farm in Foggia are expected to commence construction in the near future.
